Sometimes happiness is a feeling. An emotion.
But mostly happiness is a decision.
It’s is a choice. It’s a state of mind. It’s about choosing not to dwell on the negative.
But being happy all the time is not always easy.
Things happen in life that create all kinds of feelings other than happiness – anger, sadness, guilt, grief, depression, regret.
And it’s ok not to feel happy when bad things happen. It would be weird if we did.
What I am talking about is the day-to-day stuff and your general state of mind.
There’s so much stuff that can happen to us and around us that is beyond our control. And this can (if we choose) cause us to react in a negative way, which is ok sometimes, but if we react negatively too often, it is easy for this behaviour to become a habit.
And then you become that person who is always angry and pissed off and pessimistic and bitter.
The “cup-half-empty person”.
Don’t be the cup-half-empty person.
A negative reaction to something small, like someone spilling your drink (leaving your cup, erm, half empty, haha) or cutting you up at the lights, is not always the real cause of your feelings. It’s often about something else in your life that is bothering you and the small incident unknowingly becomes an opportunity to release those emotions.
But if, in the face of the day-to-day annoyances and grievances, we can consciously remind ourselves to be happy and to appreciate and cherish all the good things we have, have had and have to look forward to in our lives, you may just find you feel much better.
And Gandhi said that we should be the change we want to see in the world, so don’t be afraid to get the ball of happiness rolling.
